Belted kingfisher (Megaceryle Alcyon)
The Belted Kingfisher is mostly found in the United States and Canada, but in winter it migrates south to Central America and all the way down to the north coast of Venezuela and Colombia. It is usually between 28-25 centimeters long, and it eats mostly fish and insects.

Unlike many other bird species, it is the female that is the most colorful with her breast belt that is colored a deep rusty orange.
We were fascinated by this bird largely because of the female's unique color, and this rusty red tone naturally became part of the palette in our first collection for fall 2016, along with the bird's other colors - gray-blue, dark blue, and black.
