Capsule wardrobe with a twist
The concept of a capsule wardrobe can be a great help in building a limited and well-thought-out collection of outfits.
The advice is to create a small and well-chosen selection of carefully selected, diverse garments, with a fit and style that suits you. The point is that the garments should be combined as much as possible across outfits, in order to create many looks with few items. Therefore, few and neutral colors are often recommended, to make them easier to combine.
But my wardrobe is not a classic capsule wardrobe in black, gray, and white.
I have garments that go together, and garments that absolutely do not. I have neutral garments and colorful garments, clothes from different eras and in different styles.
The number of garments is also not within the recommended amount for a classic capsule wardrobe... I enjoy clothes and I enjoy colors. And if the selection becomes too narrow and similar, the playfulness disappears.
Many of my garments are items that have been on my wish list for a long time. Others are more impulse buys.
Nevertheless, I have my own strict rules for what gets a place:
I always check where the garments come from (who made them, where, and how), and choose pure natural materials and quality.
Because: even if a purchase turns out to be a miss, be it style or fit, it hasn't caused unnecessary harm to nature, animals, people, and the environment if it's made in a good way. And, a garment that is of good quality can be passed on and bring joy to others.
In addition, I navigate by my own style and needs, rather than trends. This increases the chance that the garments will remain favorites in my closet longer, and not hang untouched when the trend fades.
