Checklist for storing wool clothing

Spring is here, and it might be time to pack away some of our wool clothes. Here's what you should keep in mind:

1. Should wool be washed?

Wool clothes should be washed as little as possible, but before they are packed away for long-term storage, it's important that they are clean. You can wash them in the snow, by hand, or on a gentle wash cycle with the correct detergent, or just air them thoroughly if they haven't been used much.

Why? Because moths and other pests prefer dirty textiles. Dirt, such as food residue, skin particles, and hair, will also wear down the fibers over time.

2. How to store wool?

A knitted garment should be stored flat to avoid losing its shape, which it will do after a while if hung on a clothes hanger, simply due to gravity.

Fold and stack neatly and store garments in sealed bags or boxes. Textiles should be stored in a place that is neither damp nor too warm.

3. How to protect wool from pests?

Use cedarwood or lavender with your wool garments to deter moths, carpet beetles, and other pests. Both have a scent that pests dislike, but which is completely natural and harmless to us.

(More tips for washing, drying, and storage can be found in our maintenance guide.)

And the rest of the wool clothes? We'll be living in them all summer too, of course ☺️
