Production

The gold needle is created in collaboration with goldsmith Marte Gjone and is produced in Norway. Marte Gjone creates handmade jewelry in silver and gold, with an intuitive and organic expression. Nature and erosion are a common thread in everything she creates.

The history of the product

The idea appeared as a question during one of our evening conversations: What is the origin of everything we do at HEKNE?

At first, the simple answers came: The desire to create products that are well made and that feel good. The willingness to go against standardized production methods and instead create something in balance with nature. And so on.

But then we stopped thinking so logically and let our thoughts wander in new directions. And then the idea came, as sudden as a lightning strike:

"The needle! It’s the needle! The needle is the origin of it all."

And that is how it is. The needle is the ancient starting point for our entire craft. Such a simple, yet powerful object that has had an enormous impact on human survival and development. History changed the moment someone pulled a thread of plant fiber through a piece of animal skin using a needle made of bone. The first garment was created – a gift to us all.

This powerful image landed on our desk as a new project: to create our own needle for HEKNE.

As many of you know, we don’t do things the way many others would... The logical path might have been to browse through catalogs, choose a needle, have it produced on the other side of the globe, and sell it under our own name. That would have taken a few minutes – but that is not how we work.

Our needle obviously had to be functional. But we also wanted it to be made of gold. Because we want our needle to also be a piece of jewelry. Both useful and something one can wear; a precious object and a tribute to the very first needle that changed everything forever. An object that will be used and well taken care of. Perhaps even passed down through generations.

The next quick solution could have been to copy an existing needle and make it in gold. But that solution was too simple for us.

Our needle was to be handmade in Norway; it was to have the same dimensions as a darning needle, yet not be a copy.

We made a thorough effort to find the right artisan to collaborate with. And we were fortunate enough to find Marte Gjone. Since we make clothes and not jewelry, we needed someone who shared our vision and was willing to try to create the impossible together with us.

As soon as we saw her work and met her in person, we had no doubt that she was the right one.

We faced several technical and creative challenges during the year it took Marte Gjone and us to develop this gold needle. But now it is here – made of solid 14-karat gold, with an organic expression and made by hand.

The gold needle has been named Origin. It is not just an ordinary needle, nor just a piece of jewelry. Even though it is actually both.

It is a joy to see it become a reality. To transform the lightning strike into an actual object that did not exist before. As a tribute to the very first needle, we have made the needle a piece of jewelry, and the jewelry a needle. Origin – the very starting point.
