This cushion cover is made from a worn-out HEKNE wool sweater, along with other worn and leftover textiles. Instead of ending up in the trash, they have been given a new life.
Would you like to sew your own cushion cover from a worn-out garment?
You can sew the cushion cover from the fabrics you want, and feel free to mix them. Just remember that how you wash the pillowcase later must follow the most delicate material. For example, if you mix wool and cotton fabrics, the cushion cover must be washed on the wool program.
The cushion cover in the picture is sewn from three parts: a felted wool sweater (see how to felt below), a felted wool blanket, and linen fabric. The different parts are first sewn together to form a rectangle. In addition, you need a zipper that is at least as wide as the pillow.
This is how you calculate the measurement of your rectangular piece of fabric:
Width: Width of the cushion + 2 cm for seam allowance.
Length: (Length of the cushion x 2) + 2 cm for seam allowance.
For example: The cushion measures 40 cm x 40 cm. You will then need a piece of fabric that measures 42 cm x 82 cm.
This is how you sew the cushion cover together:
First, sew each side of the zipper, right sides together, to each short side of the fabric piece. If you want, you can then topstitch along the zipper on the front of the fabric.
Place the cushion cover wrong side out and with the zipper in the middle at the back. Pin the long sides together and sew together. Leave the zipper half open while sewing together, so that you can open the pillowcase later.
Cut off the corners and turn the cushion cover right side out.
How to felt wool garments
All wool that is not Superwash will felt when washed at high temperatures. Wash the garment at 60 degrees and shape it while it is damp. It must be washed with something else to be felted properly, such as a towel. It is a good idea to put the wool garment in a laundry bag or pillowcase to prevent the wool fibers from spreading everywhere in the machine.
